Resource Spotlight: Technology & Computing E-Book Collections

by courtney 11/20/2009 1:54:00 PM

The Library has a number of e-book collections that current students, faculty and staff can access from anywhere – but today I’m going to highlight a few that focus on topics related to technology, and computer science. Need a manual for Excel 2007? Looking for a book on ASP.NET? Interested in reading about data mining? We’ve got something for you.

Safari Tech Books Online This database includes books, certification manuals, and articles from many of the top software & technology publishers (just a few examples: O’Reilly, Sams, New Riders, Microsoft, IBM, Peachpit, Que).  Titles and topics range widely from basic, beginner-level books on software applications to handbooks and guides for the specialist. It’s not just computer science and tech topics either – Safari also includes a number of business, management, and finance titles.

Books 24 x 7 Similar to Safari, through Books 24 x 7, get access to thousands of titles in the areas of information technology and computing – plus business, finance, and government.  One nifty feature of this resource: you can create your own personal ‘folders’ to store frequently-used books or titles of special interest.

But wait! There’s more. Would you like to do some in-depth research, something more academic or technical in nature? In that case, you might consider:

Lecture Notes in Computer Science  This highly-respected series reports the latest results from all areas of computer science and information technology research. Titles include both conference proceedings and individual books. DePaul also owns many of these titles in print.

Springer 2009 Computer Science E-books Package Collection As you might guess, this resource includes over 3000 titles published in 2009: book series, monographs, textbooks, and major reference works.

Forsooth! It's Talk Like Shakespeare Day

by courtney 4/23/2009 7:00:00 AM

You may have heard or read about Mayor Daley (DePaul alumnus, Law '68) proclaiming Thursday, April 23rd Talk Like Shakespeare Day. The Website, compiled by the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, honors the Bard's 445th birthday with a variety of entertaining audio and video clips along with tips on how to introduce a little Elizabethan banter into your speech at work, school and home. Here's your chance to bust out all those pent up expressions you wish you could use everyday: thou, thee, Sirrah, Mistress, and [any verb]-eth, e.g. runneth, drinketh, speaketh. However, the Libraries do not condoneth calling anyone a jack-a-napes or a canker-blossom.

Did you know that these seemingly mundane, work-a-day words were also coined by the Bard? aerial, circumstantial, employment, moonbeam, uneducated (not one we use often around here!)

[see a list of more everyday words from Shakespeare's plays]

Message any modern phrase to "ShakespeareSays" on Twitter, and discover how it would have sounded four hundred years ago.

And there's more! Check out the Libraries' most recent acquisitions on the topic of Shakespeare or his works, or watch one of 47 performances of Shakespearean plays via streaming video through our resource, Theatre in Video

Happy birthday, William Shakespeare!

DePaul's library catalog & I-Share catalog: Down due to power outage downstate

by courtney 3/8/2009 5:10:00 PM

[Service restored!]

A power outage in Urbana-Champaign has interrupted service for all I-Share library catalogs, including the shared catalog and DePaul's library catalog. CARLI staff are working to resolve the problem as quickly as they can, but at this time they are unable to provide specifics as to when the system will be available.

In the meantime, information about whether DePaul owns an item and a rough estimation of the call number can be obtained from WorldCat; or call or stop by the campus libraries and we will be glad to assist you.

We apologize for this inconvenience.

Update: Richardson Library Reopened

by courtney 2/19/2009 2:40:00 PM
Chicago Police have given the all clear to the Richardson Library, which has now reopened and has been declared safe after an 11:30am evacuation. All campus activities and classes in this building and the entire Lincoln Park Campus will continue this afternoon as scheduled.

For updates, check DePaul’s home page at http://depaul.edu/.

I-Share catalog upgrade: offline overnight Thurs Aug 7

by courtney 8/7/2008 11:03:00 AM

Beginning at 5pm, Thursday August 7, the I-Share Catalog will be completely offline while the database is rebuilt to add the holdings of five new member libraries:

Adler School of Professional Psychology
Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Harrington College of Design
Principia College
Rush University

Except for Principia, which is located some 35 miles north of St. Louis in Elsah, Illinois, the other four newest I-Share libraries are all located in Chicago.

This outage is not expected to impact the DePaul library catalog. The work will be completed overnight Thursday and I-Share should be back online by 8am Friday, August 8.

Thanks for your patience while this upgrade is completed!

I'm about to graduate. What will my library privileges be as an alumnus?

by courtney 6/6/2008 1:19:00 PM

First of all ... congratulations to this year's graduates!

The good news:

With your DePaul Alumni ID, you can still use most of DePaul’s online resources such as Academic Search Premier, JSTOR, LexisNexis, etc. However, you need to access them from the library computer labs, located near the reference desks at the Lincoln Park and Loop campus libraries. [Need directions? Hours?] You may also check out books, videos and music, renew online, and get the same great reference service (if we do say so ourselves...ahem).

The even better news:

You are automatically enrolled in the DePaul University Alumni Association upon graduation. All you have to do is get an Alumni ID; to do this, contact Alumni Relations:

  • Online: [Requires DePaul alumni username and password]
  • By telephone - (800) 437-1898

If you’ll be relocating to another city, most public libraries provide remote access to library databases. Also, bear in mind that many public universities allow on-site public access to online resources, since they are funded by taxpayers.

More information about Alumni library privileges is available at the Library Web site.

Once again, best wishes for a happy and prosperous future to all 2008 graduates, and we hope to continue to see many of you around the library!
