Welcome New Students!

by beth 8/31/2009 10:32:00 AM

With a high temperature of about 70 today, it certainly feels like back to school time! The start of Fall Quarter is almost upon us, and the Libraries will resume normal hours starting next week on the first day of classes. For those students already on campus for Immersion Week, we thought we'd tackle some commonly asked questions:

Where is the Library?

We have two main locations: Lincoln Park (Richardson Library), on the corner of Fullerton and Kenmore, and the Loop Library, 10th floor, DePaul Center

What is my Library ID number?

This is the 14 digit number on the back of your DePaul ID card, starting with 20511

Are there restrooms on the first floor of the Richardson Library?

Yes! They are located on the west side of the first floor, over by Haber Lounge

How many books can I check out at a time, and how long can I keep them?

The sky's the limit! You can check out as many books as you need. Most books have a loan period of 4 weeks for undergrads and 8 weeks for graduate students. See our privileges page for more information: http://library.depaul.edu/services/borrowFromDePaul.aspx

Can I connect my laptop to a wireless network in the Library?

Both Library locations feature wireless hotspots on the DePaul wireless network. See wireless.depaul.edu for complete instructions

How late is the library open?

During the Quarter, the Loop Library is open until 10:00pm during the week, and the Richardson Library is open until midnight, with extended, 24 hour access during Finals Week

Can I get help with my research?

But of course! We're here to help! Talk to a librarian in person at the Reference Desks at both the Richardson Library and the Loop Library. Can't make it in? Give us a call, send us an email, or IM with dpulibrarian: http://depaul.cb.docutek.com/vrlplus/vrl_entry.asp
For help with an in-depth research project, make an appointment to work one-on-one with a librarian: http://library.depaul.edu/About/displayFAQ.aspx?f=191

Library Catalog: Interruption in Access 8/14/09

by beth 8/13/2009 2:31:00 PM
The DePaul Library catalog and the I-Share Catalog have been experiencing intermittent outages this summer due to issues with servers maintained by our consortium.

To restore the stability of these systems, the consortium will revert to version 6.5.3 in the early morning hours of August 14. The appearance of the catalog will return to what it was during the last academic year, prior to the June 2009 upgrade.

You may experience some difficulties in accessing the online catalog or renewing materials, and with other services which rely on data from the online catalog as we work to update links and data. We expect that most services will be restored by noon on Friday, August 14th.

Thank you for your patience as we transition, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Weekend Forecast: Perfect for a Bike Ride!

by beth 7/17/2009 3:33:00 PM

Looking to get out and about in Chicago this weekend? Why not hop on a bike? This summer, the Ray Meyer Fitness Center has six brand new Cruisers available to rent! Bikes can be rented starting at 9:00am and run $10 for the day.

Here's a little inspiration: the Lakefront has 18 miles of paved bike path, and don't forget about the Cook County Forest Preserve, which has over 100 miles of paved bicycle trails. If you need help getting your bike around the city, you can take your bike on the CTA buses all day, every day, and the CTA trains all day, except during rush hours: http://www.transitchicago.com/riding_cta/bike_and_ride.aspx

Check out the Campus Recreation site for additional details: http://campusrec.depaul.edu/equipmer/outdoor_br.html

Happy 4th of July!

by beth 7/2/2009 4:47:00 PM

Independence Day honors the birthday of the United States of America and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. And in honor of this national holiday, the sound of bottlerockets have been heard throughout Chicago neighborhoods since Monday. If you want to see an impressive (professional) display of fireworks this weekend, look no farther than the Loop:

July 3rd: Grant Park
300 S. Columbus Drive
More than a million spectators flood the lakefront to see one of the country's most spectacular displays set to music from 101.9 WTMX-FM (9 p.m.). The 85th Army Band kicks off festivities with a patriotic concert at Petrillo Music Shell (7:30 p.m.).

July 4th: Navy Pier
600 E. Grand Ave
Patriotic music accompanies the annual 15-minute display over Lake Michigan.

The DePaul University Libraries will be closed Friday July 3 and Saturday July 4 in recognition of Independence Day.
