Resource Spotlight: Access World News

by beth 11/5/2009 2:12:00 PM
Wonding what's going on in West Palm Beach or Bowling Green, Kentucky? What about Sao Paulo, Brazil? or New Dehli, India? You can now find news sources from all over the world in Access World News, which contains local, regional, and national U.S. newspapers as well as full-text content of key international sources including newspapers, magazines, broadcast transcripts, newswires, and news videos.

DePaul's interface offers shortcuts to local news sources, like the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, and the Redeye, as well as key national papers, such as the New York Times, and the Washington Post. Access World News offers an easy to use keyword search for these individual titles, or you can browse issues by date, giving users an alternative to Lexis Nexis. And once you find an article you like, it is a snap to email yourself the full text, print it out, or export the citation information.

If you are looking for international news, you can use the interactive world map to choose a continent of interest, and then drill down to the country, state, and city level to browse local news sources in Egypt, Zimbabwe, or Bangladesh.

New Resource: Consumer Health Complete

by beth 10/8/2009 3:56:00 PM
Touted as the most comprehensive, consumer oriented health content around, Consumer Health Complete, is designed to support patients' information needs and foster an overall understanding of health-related topics. This database contains encyclopedias, fact sheets, and drug information, as well as featuring a Health Highlight (which is trick-or-treat safety tips this month!). Patrons can also browse by topic, and find information on Alternative Treatments, Food, Nutrition & Exercise, and Surgeries & Procedures. Remote access is available to current members of DePaul's community, and alumni can access this resource (and others!) in our library labs in both the Richardson Library and the Loop Library.

Go Wireless at the Library!

by beth 9/11/2009 3:14:00 PM
Bringing a laptop to campus? No need to haul around your ethernet cable, the Loop Library and the Richardson Library are wireless hotspots! DePaul University hosts two wireless networks: depaulblue and depaulwireless

Connect up with your Dell, Mac, Blackberry, or iPhone! Find out more on getting connected here: wireless.depaul.edu

Students can now also print wirelessly from their laptops while on campus. It's called iPrint, and you'll first need to install a print driver available through your software downloads on campus connection, and then pick the most convenient printer location to you. Full instructions can be found here: http://is.depaul.edu/intelliprint

Welcome New Students!

by beth 8/31/2009 10:32:00 AM

With a high temperature of about 70 today, it certainly feels like back to school time! The start of Fall Quarter is almost upon us, and the Libraries will resume normal hours starting next week on the first day of classes. For those students already on campus for Immersion Week, we thought we'd tackle some commonly asked questions:

Where is the Library?

We have two main locations: Lincoln Park (Richardson Library), on the corner of Fullerton and Kenmore, and the Loop Library, 10th floor, DePaul Center

What is my Library ID number?

This is the 14 digit number on the back of your DePaul ID card, starting with 20511

Are there restrooms on the first floor of the Richardson Library?

Yes! They are located on the west side of the first floor, over by Haber Lounge

How many books can I check out at a time, and how long can I keep them?

The sky's the limit! You can check out as many books as you need. Most books have a loan period of 4 weeks for undergrads and 8 weeks for graduate students. See our privileges page for more information: http://library.depaul.edu/services/borrowFromDePaul.aspx

Can I connect my laptop to a wireless network in the Library?

Both Library locations feature wireless hotspots on the DePaul wireless network. See wireless.depaul.edu for complete instructions

How late is the library open?

During the Quarter, the Loop Library is open until 10:00pm during the week, and the Richardson Library is open until midnight, with extended, 24 hour access during Finals Week

Can I get help with my research?

But of course! We're here to help! Talk to a librarian in person at the Reference Desks at both the Richardson Library and the Loop Library. Can't make it in? Give us a call, send us an email, or IM with dpulibrarian: http://depaul.cb.docutek.com/vrlplus/vrl_entry.asp
For help with an in-depth research project, make an appointment to work one-on-one with a librarian: http://library.depaul.edu/About/displayFAQ.aspx?f=191

Library Catalog & I-Share: Access Restored 8/14

by beth 8/14/2009 1:28:00 PM
Updates to the library catalog and the I-Share system have been completed and service has been restored. Please contact us if you continue to experience any difficulties. Again, thank you for your patience and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Library Catalog: Interruption in Access 8/14/09

by beth 8/13/2009 2:31:00 PM
The DePaul Library catalog and the I-Share Catalog have been experiencing intermittent outages this summer due to issues with servers maintained by our consortium.

To restore the stability of these systems, the consortium will revert to version 6.5.3 in the early morning hours of August 14. The appearance of the catalog will return to what it was during the last academic year, prior to the June 2009 upgrade.

You may experience some difficulties in accessing the online catalog or renewing materials, and with other services which rely on data from the online catalog as we work to update links and data. We expect that most services will be restored by noon on Friday, August 14th.

Thank you for your patience as we transition, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
