by alexis 8/21/2009 9:00:00 AM
Friday August 21 marks the end of summer quarter.  During break, the DePaul Libraries will be closed on Sundays from August 23 to September 8.   Drop boxes are available for anyone wanting to return books while we are closed.  There is a indoor drop box on the Kenmore-side of the hallway leading to the Lincoln Park library and an outdoor book depository against the wall near the statue on the quad-side of the library.  Congrats to all for successfully finishing another quarter!

Research Help is Available

by alexis 7/13/2009 4:08:00 PM

The library offers research assistance free of charge. Whether you’re having trouble finding books, articles and statistics or need help navigating the library’s databases, we can guide you. Stop by the reference desk or contact us through our Ask-A-Librarian email and IM reference services.  We’re always happy to answer your questions.

For lengthy or complex questions, schedule a research consultation to work one-on-one with a librarian.  We can provide individual help with your research when you need it and we’ll spend the time it takes to help you find what you need in a friendly and efficient manner. Here’s what students have said about our research consultation service:

"The great thing about the DePaul Library staff is that they really seem to take an active interest in the student's topic and are willing to pick up the instruction from where the student is and go forward."

"…I have the highest regard for the library staff. In my experience it is singularly the best service available to students. MY HONEST OPINION."

Don’t spend hours at home struggling!  Join your peers and schedule a research consultation this quarter.

Color Copier and New Study Room

by alexis 6/30/2009 11:25:00 AM

Summer brings new and exciting things: warm weather, trips to the beach, and most importantly new color copiers/scanners at the Lincoln Park and Loop campus libraries and a study room at the Loop library!

The student copiers deduct $0.40 a page for color copies from your Demon Express account. Bring a flash drive to save your black and white and color scans for free.  Scanning is only available for flat sheets of paper inserted into the copier's document feeder.  For this reason, books cannot be scanned directly from the glass; you must first make photocopies and scan them through the feeder.  If you need to scan a high resolution image or photograph, the Campus Copy Center is a good, local option.

After you're done using the color copier, head on over to the new study room at the Loop Library (located to the immediate left of the Bloomberg workstation and Career Information Collection).  Enjoy your new quiet study area.

We hope you like these new additions and keep checking the blog for additional services and collection updates.  Enjoy your summer and don't hesistate to ask whenever you have questions.  We're here to help!

Libraries Closed June 13-14

by alexis 6/12/2009 2:38:00 PM

Congrats on completing yet another quarter!  The DePaul Libraries will be closed on Saturday June 13 and Sunday June 14.  We'll reopen at 8:00am Monday.  We look foward to seeing you then.  Have a great summer everyone!

If you need to return books, use the book drops.  There is one on the outside of the library at the quad-side entrance and another inside the building on the Kenmore side.

Alumni Library Access

by alexis 6/8/2009 8:00:00 AM

Congratulations graduating seniors!!!  We often get questions about alumni library privileges so here's a quick rundown of the services and access to the collection you can expect.  You will be able to:

  • Check out books from DePaul (4 week checkout)
  • Check out videos and cds from DePaul (2 items for 7 days)
  • Enjoy on campus access to computers and most article databases through the labs in the Richardson Library and Loop Library with an alumni i.d.
  • Receive the same friendly service and help with research questions

For a full list of alumni privileges, visit the alumni privileges page on the library's website. If you’ll be relocating to another city, most public libraries provide remote access to library databases. Also, bear in mind that many public universities allow on-site public access to online resources, since they are funded by taxpayers.

Congrats again and we hope to see you back here soon!

What is the History of Mother's Day?

by alexis 5/8/2009 11:52:00 AM

Red and Pink Carnations

The idea of setting aside one day each year to honor mothers was the suggestion of Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia.  On May 12, 1907 Anne held a memorial service for her late mother in Grafton, West Virginia.  She asked those in attendance to wear white carnations to celebrate her mother.  The observance sparked a trend across the nation and within 5 years nearly every state participated in the May celebration.  On May 9, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother's Day a national holiday.

Mother's Day is now celebrated in the United States on the 2nd Sunday in May.  Popular convention suggests wearing pink and red carnations to pay tribute to living mothers and a white carnation in rememberance of a mother who has died.

How Do I Renew Books?

by alexis 4/24/2009 9:28:00 AM

lego boy with backpackNo more lugging books back and forth from the library to renew them.  Do it online!  From the library's home page, click on the "Renew Books (My Account)" link.  Then, enter your last name and library borrower i.d., which is on the back of your DePaul i.d. card and starts with 20511. Check the boxes next to the books you want to renew and click "renew."  It's that simple!
