Welcome New Students!

by beth 8/31/2009 10:32:00 AM

With a high temperature of about 70 today, it certainly feels like back to school time! The start of Fall Quarter is almost upon us, and the Libraries will resume normal hours starting next week on the first day of classes. For those students already on campus for Immersion Week, we thought we'd tackle some commonly asked questions:

Where is the Library?

We have two main locations: Lincoln Park (Richardson Library), on the corner of Fullerton and Kenmore, and the Loop Library, 10th floor, DePaul Center

What is my Library ID number?

This is the 14 digit number on the back of your DePaul ID card, starting with 20511

Are there restrooms on the first floor of the Richardson Library?

Yes! They are located on the west side of the first floor, over by Haber Lounge

How many books can I check out at a time, and how long can I keep them?

The sky's the limit! You can check out as many books as you need. Most books have a loan period of 4 weeks for undergrads and 8 weeks for graduate students. See our privileges page for more information: http://library.depaul.edu/services/borrowFromDePaul.aspx

Can I connect my laptop to a wireless network in the Library?

Both Library locations feature wireless hotspots on the DePaul wireless network. See wireless.depaul.edu for complete instructions

How late is the library open?

During the Quarter, the Loop Library is open until 10:00pm during the week, and the Richardson Library is open until midnight, with extended, 24 hour access during Finals Week

Can I get help with my research?

But of course! We're here to help! Talk to a librarian in person at the Reference Desks at both the Richardson Library and the Loop Library. Can't make it in? Give us a call, send us an email, or IM with dpulibrarian: http://depaul.cb.docutek.com/vrlplus/vrl_entry.asp

Libraries Closed Sundays 8/23-9/8

by alexis 8/21/2009 9:00:00 AM
Friday August 21 marks the end of summer quarter.  During break, the DePaul Libraries will be closed on Sundays from August 23 to September 8.   Drop boxes are available for anyone wanting to return books while we are closed.  There is a indoor drop box on the Kenmore-side of the hallway leading to the Lincoln Park library and an outdoor book depository against the wall near the statue on the quad-side of the library.  Congrats to all for successfully finishing another quarter!

Bygone DePaul: DePaul Presidents: Rev. Peter V. Byrne, C.M.

by lizzy 8/19/2009 9:00:00 AM

Eighth in a series highlighting DePaul’s campus and how it has changed through the years.

Father Peter Byrne became the first president of DePaul University (at the time known as St. Vincent’s College) five months after the College opened, on January 2nd, 1899. He served as president until 1909. Born in Ireland in 1846, Byrne immigrated to the United States at age 16. His health was not good, and he was ordained in 1866 at the early age of 20 so that "he might enjoy a few years of priesthood." Fr. Byrne confounded everyone by living until the age of 86.

Father Byrne had big dreams for what he wanted to accomplish during his presidency, and his tenure saw many changes. In 1899, the College consisted of one building called St. Vincent's College. Byrne began ambitious building projects as the original St. Vincent’s College building became obsolete quickly. The building was razed in 1906 in order to build what is now Byrne Hall. By the time Fr. Byrne retired, St. Vincent's College had been renamed and re-chartered as DePaul University, and the campus consisted of four buildings (St. Vincent's Church, the College Theater, the Lyceum, and the Administration Building). Student enrollment had risen from 70 in the first year to 200, and tuition from $40 to $60. Father Byrne's presidency laid the seeds for the university into which DePaul has grown.

Library Catalog: Interruption in Access 8/14/09

by beth 8/13/2009 2:31:00 PM
The DePaul Library catalog and the I-Share Catalog have been experiencing intermittent outages this summer due to issues with servers maintained by our consortium.

To restore the stability of these systems, the consortium will revert to version 6.5.3 in the early morning hours of August 14. The appearance of the catalog will return to what it was during the last academic year, prior to the June 2009 upgrade.

You may experience some difficulties in accessing the online catalog or renewing materials, and with other services which rely on data from the online catalog as we work to update links and data. We expect that most services will be restored by noon on Friday, August 14th.

Thank you for your patience as we transition, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
