Tornado Experiments

by heather 4/14/2009 1:38:00 PM

What do you mean, tornado experiments? Yes,  April is famously known for its taxes, tulips and rain, but do you know what else April showers could bring?  Tornadoes!
Actually , the official kick-off of the largest attempt in history to study the development and evolution of tornadoes begins May 10th.  Known as the “Verification Of Rotation in Tornadoes EXperiment (VORTEX2)," this government–funded  study is designed to “lead to a better understanding of why tornadoes form--and how they can be more accurately predicted." Unfortunately, perhaps, Illinois is not one of the  study focus areas mentioned in the National Science Foundation’s press release.

For Illinois tornado news, we recommend a visit to the Illinois State Climatologist’s office.Think tornadoes avoid big cities? You may want to check out A Study of Chicago's Significant Tornadoes. The Univeristy of Illinois Extension Service has advice on what to do if a tornado watch or warning is issued for your area at: http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/disaster/storm/sw_tornado.html.

For more (and potentially less terrifying) national science news, you might enjoy browsing http://www.nsf.gov/discoveries/ for information on scientific innovations and discoveries funded by the National Science Foundation.

Don't forget to file your taxes by midnight, April 15th!

Operation Read and Restore: DePaul Adopts Overseas Soldiers

by beth 4/14/2009 1:15:00 PM

DePaul University Libraries, in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations and the Office of Mission & Values, is excited to announce the second year of Operation Read and Restore!

The mission of Operation R&R is to send gift packages of books, movies, and magazines to support the morale of our troops by ensuring that those serving overseas in military outposts know their loved ones and communities care about them. Members of the DePaul community (students, staff, faculty, and alumni) have the opportunity to "adopt" service men and women serving overseas who  have a connection to DePaul, but we need your help! If you are a current student, staff or faculty member, or alumnus and have a loved one serving overseas in the military, please put him or her up for adoption! http://alumni.depaul.edu/operationRAndR/SubmitASoldier.aspx

See complete details about Operation Read and Restore at our website: http://alumni.depaul.edu/operationRAndR/

Bygone DePaul: The College Theater

by lizzy 4/8/2009 4:13:00 PM
Fourth in a series highlighting DePaul’s campus and how it has changed through the years.

The College Theater has one of the most interesting histories of any DePaul University building. It was built in 1907 by the architect John Pridmore and was located at 2219 N. Sheffield, where the Ray Meyer Fitness Center now stands. The Theater was beautifully designed; it followed the Grecian style, with a large dome and no pillars to obstruct anyone’s view of the stage. The walls were painted with ornate murals. The Vincentians received criticism for hosting plays in the theater, as some people felt that priests should not be involved in such worldly activities. However, the Vincentians believed that they could edify the student body and Chicago citizens by hosting plays “devoted to the highest and best drama” (free, of course, from “murder, suicide, and kissing.”).  The Vincentians also had another hope. At the time, the University was suffering under $500,000 in debt, and they believed that ticket sales from a popular theater could help pay it off.

The Theater did not prove as successful as the Vincentians had hoped, and with the advent of World War I the building was turned into barracks for the Student Army Training Corps. After the end of the war, the Theater was remodeled into a gymnasium, called the University Auditorium (or,“The Barn”). The Blue Demon basketball team played here from 1920 to 1957, and Ray Meyer coached the team to numerous victories from inside those walls. However, as the team got more successful, the Auditorium became too small and Alumni Hall was built as a larger venue for the basketball team. Throughout its history, the College Theater served as a venue for student activities such as dances, commencement exercises, lectures, debates and assemblies. Unfortunately, “The Barn” caught fire in 1967 and was torn down in 1976.

Magnetic Poetry Contest

by heather 4/6/2009 5:09:00 PM
Help us celebrate National Poetry Month by creating a poem on our magnetic word board and snapping a picture of it with your phone or camera!

We've set a up a magnet board with plenty of words to help you create poetic masterpieces on the first floor of Richardson Library on DePaul's Lincoln Park campus.

Send your photo to picture64that@photos.flickr.com, DePaul University Libraries' Flickr Account.  You MUST include your name and contact information in the body of your message. We will remove your contact info before we post your photo.

We'll include some of our favorites in "The Full Text," the DePaul University Libraries blog; and one lucky poet will win a new ipod shuffle!  The winner will be selected at random from all eligible entries. And yes, we'll be using our judgment to determine what "eligible" means, so you should too.   We reserve the right to refrain from posting poems that are offensive, lewd or otherwise, so please save your risqué poems for the home refrigerator; submissions to this contest should be appropriate and in line with the University's Code of Student Responsibility.

How can we improve our website to best meet your needs?

Tell us what you think!

We’re looking for some undergraduate students to give us feedback on the Library site. Participate in our usability study; sessions will take about an hour, and you don’t need any previous experience using the Library’s website.

Study participants will receive a $20 gift card to Barnes & Noble as a 'thank you.' Sessions will be held at John T Richardson Library (Lincoln Park Campus) the weeks of April 6th and 13th.
